Two people are truly lucky to be alive tonight after they escaped death in a freak accident this afternoon on the northern highway. 7NEWS was on the scene shortly after the accident and spoke to the driver Sandra Perez who told us she made a split second decision, which saved her life.

Sandra Perez,
"I knew if I didn't brakes, I would have hit him so I started blowing and I put brakes and when I put brakes I saw another person coming on a cycle on the other side so then I swerved and saw I was going into the drain. So I swerved back and that's how I ended up on this side of the street. The vehicle flipped."

Keith Swift,
The vehicle received major damage to the front - what happened to you and your passenger?

Sandra Perez,
"Nothing. I just thank God because it could have been worse. I know for sure if I had hit the black Mercedes somebody would have died. The vehicle is messed up but we are alive. I have no pain, nothing. The person that was driving the black Mercedes was coming out of Bella Vista, I think he or she lives in Bella Vista, they know they caused an accident and they should come up and own up to this because this could have killed me, could have killed him or her, could have killed a number of people and they didn't even stop to render any assistance."

The 2003 Mitsubishi Montero received damage to its front windshield and roof.
