He formally assumes full command of the Police Department on Friday and Commissioner of Police Gerald Westby has been touring, telling the rank and file what direction the Police Department will take under his guidance. He explained to us that he'll be tough on crime and appreciative of the men and women who help him in this task.
Gerald Westby, Commissioner of Police
"What we are trying to do is to project that image and let the police develop that self pride in themselves once again and that is why throughout my tour I will be having inspection parades to promote the positive image in the police and to promote a positive image out there of the police."
"I will be very tough on gun related crime. In Belize City we have a problem with gun related crime and violence on the street so we want to work on that. That is where the problem is in Belize City and we need to look at a strategies to address the proliferation of guns in the street, intervention, and get the repeat offenders, gun related offenders, into jail where they belong."
Keith Swift,
Will we see more officers deployed
Gerald Westby,
"Well what we want to see is to maximize the use of our police resources. What we have been discussing are strategies to look at so we can have more police within the limited resources on the street at peak hours when they are most needed, so that is some of the strategies. Certainly we may not be getting additional police but it is the way how you utlize your resoucrs which will make the difference."
