A 14-year-old male cut her throat: that's what police have concluded about the murder of 20 year old domestic Mara Garcia.

She was found dead on Friday evening in her boss's home in Lord's Bank; she had been bound gagged, raped, and then killed with a sharp bladed instrument. That sharp weapon, police today disclosed, was a samurai sword and the person wielding it was a 14 year old boy from the Ladyville area accompanied by his brother, a 16 year old from Belize City. Because these brothers are teenaged minors, we are not showing their pictures or disclosing their names at this time. But, even without those details, it's a stunning conclusion to what had already been a shocking murder and police investigators say that they have a caution statement, basically a confession, to back up their findings.

How did they catch them? Well, Officer in Charge of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, Senior

Superintendent of Police Mario Vernon had predicted that those responsible for killing 20-year-old Mara Garcia would soon bungle things because they were amateurs. His theory proved right as yesterday police in Ladyville came up on four young men who were believed to have just burglarized a home in the Vista Del Mar community. In the group police found one of the young men believed to have been involved in the Mara Garcia murder. Today, Sr. Superintendent Vernon told the press how they tracked the accused killers down.

Sr. Supt. Mario Vernon, Lead Investigator
"Yesterday in the Ladyville Village area, specifically Vista Del Mar, four minors really messed up on another burglary. Within that group we found one of the suspects in the Floyd Brown report. From there on it was just a matter of applying interview skills that we came up with the other person that was responsible for the Floyd Brown report. They are two minors, they are brothers, one is 16 and one is 14. We have had confessions from both of them and these confessions were witnessed by their relatives and by a Justice of the Peace. We subsequently recovered what we believe is the murder weapon and three more items that belong to Mr. Brown. These minors have since been arrested and charged for murder and burglary of that premises. They confessed to going into the premises, the both of them, and they coincided each other's stories and we have other witnesses who are corroborating their story. They confessed, as I said, to going into the premises and one of them actually killed the girl. The murder weapon, we believe, is a sword; it's a very sharp sword from the residence."

"Where did you find the murder weapon?"

Sr. Supt. Mario Vernon,
"One of the accused persons took us to where he had it. The motive of the murder was to steal. They stole electronic games, quite a number of name brand clothing, cellular phone, little bit of cash here and there, and that type of thing."

Again, police say the motive for the crimes, which was carried out during a 6 hour occupation of the home, was simply burglary as a few petty electronic items including a DVD player and video games were stolen. The 14 year old was not in school but the 16 year old was receiving vocational training. The teenagers are presently being held at the Queen Street Police Station.
