They are supposed to make sure the city's children are in school but tonight it seems the Education Department couldn't care less about what truancy officers do because they have come under the retrenchment axe. 7NEWS has confirmed that 11 of the 21 personnel at the district truancy office got their letters of termination this week. The 11 who were terminated are all open vote workers and are the field officers, while those who didn't get the axe are mostly administrative staff. We understand that the 11 field officers have been given the option to re-apply for their jobs when school starts again in September. Presumably hedging their bets to be re-hired, they declined interviews today.
