Tonight, Belmopan Police are narrowing down their investigation into 200 passports stolen from the Immigration Department headquarters in Belmopan. None of the passports have been recovered, but police are closing in on what they believe is a cleverly concocted inside job.
As we noted last night, the building itself showed no signs of a break in but the processing room where the passports are kept did appear to have been broken into. But was it really? Police believe that the door was rigged to make it look like someone had forced entry but a close look has led investigators to believe that it is a set up, staged to cover the tracks of an insider.
Police are trying to figure out who that person or persons may be but tonight, no one is detained. The one clerk who was held has been released, but other persons from within the department will be questioned this week. Still, police surmise that it will not be a quick investigation.
