a small car and a sports utility vehicle collided this afternoon on Coney Drive and the Mayor of Belize City was one of the drivers. Shortly after 1 pm, 18-year-old Saint John's Junior College student Minelli Pariente was southbound on Coney Drive when she crashed head onto into the left hand side of Mayor David Fonseca's Dodge Durango. Mayor Fonseca was entering Coney Drive from off the Northern Highway where there is a stop sign. Pariente had the right of way on Coney Drive.

It's a dangerous intersection that has seen many collisions and Pariente had to be taken to the hospital where she remains under observation. Her uncle Lloyd Soberanis told us what he knew.

Lloyd Soberanis,
"Well Dr. Lizarraga says she has to go for x-rays. She has pain in her chest. The airbag bruised her chest. She was coming up this way. She had just called us and asked what is for lunch and we told her and she was going to come down there to have lunch."

Pariente's family says she is only under observation at the hospital and should be released after 24 hours.
