In Friday's newscast we told you that the DPP had directed that no criminal charges should be brought against Constable Aldo Ayuso for the shooting death of Leslie Rogers. But, weeks later, Ayuso had not returned to active duty because a disciplinary charge against him was pending. Ayuso was brought up on internal charges for aggravated assault after he allegedly pulled a gun on a civilian.
We have since found out that encounter happened before the Leslie Rogers shooting. But though it happened sometime ago, the matter was heard today by a disciplinary tribunal. That tribunal recommended that Constable Ayuso should be dismissed from the Police Department. But that's only a recommendation, it will still have to be ok'd by the Commissioner of Police and forwarded, with evidence, to the Solicitor General for review. If they comply with the recommendation, it would bring an end to a career in which Ayuso was highly regarded within the department for his tough approach, but widely disliked by a large section of the city population which felt he often used unjustified force.
