A 12-year-old girl was sold by her sister for $1,000 and even so her family now claims they only got some of that money. On Friday night, we broke the story about the shocking case of human trafficking and tonight 7NEWS has more details.
The transaction was reportedly conducted in June by the child's 23-year-old sister who agreed to sell her to a Salvadoran man, not an American as we had originally reported. This sister told police that she had agreed on a price of $1,000 but claims that she only got $100 as a down payment for her sister. The man took her to Salvador where he lived with his brother and sister in law. But the sister in law had evidence to suggest that the man had raped the child. She reported it to authorities there and he was arrested on rape charges and then the girl was returned to Belize. But she can't be transferred to her family because they sold her and didn't file a missing persons report.
She comes from a family of 14 children in the Cowpen Area. The police are handling the case, but at this point they have not transferred the file to the Social Services Department which would have to place the child in a stable setting. Presently she is being kept at a shelter in the Cayo area. Police are reportedly weighing charges against her family and those may include procuration and human trafficking offences.
