A Belizean man, 40-year-old Marlon Soberanis is facing a murder charge in New York City, accused of killing another Belizean, 38 yearoOld Roland Gibson. According to an account in the New York Times, at 4:00 a.m. on January first, both men were at a Belizean New Year's party at the corner of West 124th Street and Lennox in Harlem when they had a dispute over money.
There was reportedly an exchange of gunfire where Roland Gibson shot Marlon Soberanis in the hand; Soberanis then reportedly pulled out his firearm, and shot Gibson in the neck. Both men were taken to different hospitals and Gibson died shortly after at Harlem Hospital Center, while New York detectives found Soberanis at a Brooklyn Hospital. They connected him to the Harlem shooting and have charged him with murder. A second man, 27-year-old Kevin parks, was charged with weapons possession.
It's of note that the Roland Gibson's sister was also murdered. In November of 2004, Irene Gibson was shot to death at her home at the corner of Baghdad and Alexandria Streets. Her common law husband Lloyd Brakeman will go on trial for that murder this year.
