He implicated two men as burglars but today in Magistrate's Court a Belize City watchman wound up being the guilty one.

In March of 2005, 45-year-old George Grant told police that he saw two men burglarize Juanita's outlet on Albert Street. At the time, Grant was the watchman for a nearby store. He said he saw Phillip Peyrefitte and Enrqiue Soberanis break into Juanita's on the night of March 27th. But yesterday when he appeared on the witness stand in court, he changed his tune, and told the court that the only reason he gave that statement to police was that he had something against the two men.

That was his story, but it's also an offence and Magistrate Henry Usher ordered that he be arrested as soon as he left the witness stand. He was charged for a false statement declaration, and today pleaded guilty. He was fined $250 which he has until February 28th to pay.

As for the two falsely accused men, one is in jail on a prior conviction and they must wait until Wednesday to see if Magistrate Usher will drop this charge against them.
