A group of fishermen from Monkey River Village spent the last week in Punta Allen, a small fishing village on the Yucatan Coast. They weren't vacationing, there were learning how to catch lobster. Of course, like any Belizean fisherman worth his salt these Monkey River men know plenty about catching lobster, but they were learning how to do it sustainable, so that there'll still be lobster for successive generations to harvest. Alfonso Noble traveled to Yucatan to find out how this will be done.
"The purpose of this exchange visit is for fishermen to gain practical experience on the construction of lobster shades and also to see the system of management Punta Allen fishermen use. One of the objectives of the program is to share experiences at the local, national, and international level. We feel that by sharing experiences and best practices, we'll be able to share the information as to why this program has been very successful."
