31-year-old Clint Geban was killed in broad daylight in September of 2001, murdered as he stood at the corner of Plues and South Street by a gunman who drove up in a geo tracker with foreign plates. It was an unsolved mystery, an old case, which looked as if it had turned a cold case. But, police proved that the case may be old, but not cold, as they today charged 27-year-old Kenroy Tillet for the murder. Those charges come 4 years and 5 months after the killing - and the head of the Crimes Investigation Branch Chester Williams told us what accounted for the breakthrough.
ASP Chester Williams, Commander - C.I.B.
"Our investigation has led us, and with overwhelming evidence I must say, and as a result we have arrested and charged Kenroy Tillet from the George Street Area in connection with the murder of Mr. Geban. I must say that from the inception of this investigation I must say I was not in Belize City at the time, but having gone through the file and looking at the evidence in the file, there was some sort of evidence directing at Tillet but there was not sufficient evidence in order for the police to arrest and charge him with the crime. However, the further investigation today has led us to sufficient evidence leading to his arrest."
Jules Vasquez,
What was that evidential breakthrough?
ASP Chester Williams,
"Well I must say we had witnesses who came forward. We conducted constant interviews with witnesses and we managed to break through and get some sort of evidence that was good enough to be presented to a court of law."
Jules Vasquez,
As I recall it, Geban was gunned down in broad daylight. Do you all now know was the motive for such a brazen crime?
ASP Chester Williams,
"Then Jules, as you can recall, that was at the height of the gang violence in Belize City and basically, from what I can see in the investigation file, the motive for that particular crime may have been gang related.
Never feel like you get away from a crime because once we have the evidence to prosecute you, we will ensure that you are prosecuted."
Williams says they are also working on two other murders that happened two or three years ago - and arrests may shortly be forthcoming in those cases.
