It's enough firepower to outfit a small fighting force, so why were 34 high-powered rifles stashed on a remote caye? Well, that's what police are trying to figure out tonight. Acting on intelligence received, on Saturday morning a joint BDF and Belize National Coast Guard team descended on Deer Caye, a small island located west of Ambergris Caye. No one was on the island, but the intelligence led the team right to the find. They dug up two ice boxes containing a small armory. A total of 34 rifles including Mack 90's, Ruger range rifles, AR-15 and AR-18's, Galils, HK 94's and other semi-automatic weapons were found.
The 34 rifles were collected and turned over to the Belize Police Department, which is now trying to figure out who the guns were for and why they were stored there. We understand that while the rifles are fully functioning they are not the type of weapons used by Belizean law enforcement personnel and are older models, some of which are no longer being produced. Notably no ammunition for the weapons was found on the island.
