Two weeks ago a family turned to 7NEWS when they felt they were being ignored by the police. Ignored because their 15-year-old daughter and sister had allegedly been having sexual relations with as many as three policemen, and now the standard six student is pregnant for one of the officers. Still the family claimed that police refused to arrest anyone, weeks after the complaint was made, that is until 7NEWS broke the story which led to a major breakthrough today.
This afternoon police constables 25-year-old Gilroy Usher Jr. and 26-year-old Elton Eligio were charged for unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl on separate occasions during 2005. Both officers were arraigned in court and are in the Hattieville prison tonight. We'll tell you why bail was denied in a moment but first here is a late evening reaction to today's development from the girl's mother. Again to protect the teen's identity we won't show her mother's face or release her name.
Mother of Accused Victim,
"We the family would first of all like to give special thanks to Channel 7 and the police for working with us. After three months pain and suffering we hope it will be resolved as soon as possible so we can all get on with our lives."
Keith Swift,
There is a third named man still out there. Do you think he should also be in jail?
Mother of Accused Victim,
"Yes."
Keith Swift,
Now has the family been approached or offered money to not pursue the charges?
Mother of Accused Victim,
"Yes."
Keith Swift,
Do you think this would have reached this far if you didn't come to the media?
Mother of Accused Victim,
"I think nothing would have been done if my daughter didn't go to Channel 7 because it was the 17th of January that we made our report and I think because she went to the media, all of this thing is happening.
I would also like the public to know and everybody to know if anything happens to me or any of my family, those policemen will be responsible."
