She was paid to protect City Hall but police say in the wee hours of Friday morning, 33-year-old security guard Shirley Arzu stole $1,700 from the City Council Office on North Front Street. Arzu was today formally charged with burglary.

She was the security guard on duty between 4 and 5 am Friday morning when someone entered the finance section of City Hall and headed into a room where $1,700 in petty cash was stolen from an unlocked filing cabinet. In court today, Arzu pleaded not guilty and was offered and met bail of $3,000. She is to return to court on August 8th. Flowers was suspended for two weeks after the burglary was discovered on Friday.

A city council representative told us this evening they don't have to wait for a conviction to terminate Arzu. She has been a security guard with the city council for six months.
