35 kilos or 77 pounds, that's the quantity of cocaine that police have recovered in the past week in the Belize District, most of it between Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
Intelligence to the Anti-Drug Unit suggests that possibly a week ago a go fast drug vessel may have been shipwrecked near Half Moon Caye and lost its cargo, releasing possibly hundreds of kilos of cocaine into the sea. Again, no proof of this has been found, but police do know that a lot of drugs were floating in the sea and a good number of fishermen have turned into kilo fishers.
The concern now is the death toll that traditionally arises from such finds. Police believe that the wide dispersion of the drugs will inevitably give rise to those criminals known as drug pirates who search out the fisher-folk who've found the drugs and try to strong it, or the cash proceeds from it, and when they can't, they resort to violent crime.
That's why police in Belize City may have saved a life this morning when they found 4 packages of cocaine amounting to 5 kilos. We saw personnel from the Anti-Drug Unit with their canine assistants searching for more in an area near conch shell bay, but that search didn't produce anything.
