Last night we told you about a major break in the search for the Guatemalan bandits that have been terrorizing tourists in western Belize. Information is still hard to come by, but tonight we do have new details.
This is what we know: based on intelligence Guatemalan police intercepted a gang of 9 men in the Peten area of Guatemala on Monday July 10th. All nine were armed and were subsequently charged for firearms possession. That is a relatively minor offence in Guatemala but all remain in custody tonight because they cannot meet bail.
Our information is that at least two of the detainees have been confirmed as bandits who pulled off the attacks on tourists in Belize. Guatemalan police believe that the gang of nine were heading to pull off another heist which was subsequently foiled by their arrest.
No word on how their arrest and detention will impact the investigation here in Belize.
