A major drug cargo making its way into Belize City was intercepted by police last night. Sometime around 9:30, officers working at the mile 4 Western Highway checkpoint detained an Isuzu Rodeo traveling into Belize City. The driver was acting suspiciously and the jeep smelled of weed. When police checked inside the ride, they found three crocus bags stuffed with marijuana. Police Press Officer G. Michael Reid explains.
G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer
"We have a large quantity of marijuana that was gotten at the checkpoint last night, sometime around 9:30 pm. Police on duty observed a blue Isuzu Rodeo pulling up to the checkpoint and the driver acted suspiciously. They did a search of the vehicle and as a result found this in the backseat and the back portion of the vehicle. Certainly we must applaud the integrity of the officer who did his job and it showed that the individual has been arrested and will be taken to court."
Alfonso Noble,
What will that person be charged with?
G. Michael Reid,
"Drug trafficking and possession of marijuana but the drug trafficking is the bigger charge of course."
Alfonso Noble,
All told how much weed do we have here?
G. Michael Reid,
"We have 128 pounds or roughly 58 kilos of marijuana."
The marijuana weighed in at 128 pounds. Police have arrested and charged the driver, 30-year-old Frank Jacobs of Richard Street for drug trafficking.
