Last night, the Crimes Intelligence Unit foiled a gas station robbery before it happened. Officers acted on intelligence that a pair of young men would be robbing a gas station at mile one and a half on the Northern Highway. Sure enough, when the CIU rolled up they saw a gold car, lights off and two men sitting inside. But when the police pulled up, they pulled out, speeding down the Northern Highway, unto the Belcan Bridge.
After crossing over the vehicle made a hard right turn into Peter Seco Street and continued down the unpaved road all the way to where it intersects with a canal. The driver didn't stop, and went nose first into the canal. The two men jumped out, and police say the passenger had a shotgun and the driver a pistol. That passenger, later identified as Edwin Flowers, was shot in the right leg when police say he seemed that he was going to fire at them. The driver, now identified as Danny Anderson managed to get away but was caught shortly after.
Tonight, both men are in the hospital: Edwin Flowers has gunshot wounds to his leg, and Danny Anderson has a broken jaw, which police say he sustained a week ago but re-aggravated last night.
Because police say both threw their weapons into the canal, and they claim to have foiled the robbery, the pair can only be charged for fairly minor traffic offences.
