A nineteen-year-old woman was killed in a traffic accident on Friday night. Tonight the man who was driving her is in the hospital and is facing a long sheet of criminal charges.Police say that around 1:30 am on Saturday Ladyville resident Trevor Mathews was driving a white Prado, allegedly the property of the U.S. Embassy, down Magazine Road. At the corner of Cemetery and Magazine Roads, Mathews failed to observe the stop sign and the Prado collided with a Toyota Camry being driven by 29-year-old Jermaine Ottley.
It was a violent impact and police say Rasheeda Young, who was seated in the back seat of the Prado, received severe head and body injuries. She was transported to the KHMH but later died. Mathews was also seriously hurt. His ribs and legs were damaged and he had to be hospitalized. He remains in the KHMH today under the police guard. And Rasheeda's sister Annika Hill says Mathews belongs in jail. She told us that she planned a celebration with her sister on Friday night but it never happened.
Annika Hill, Sister of Deceased
"She left from work and we were supposed to meet out because what happened was that it was my first Friday night off and she said we are going tonight, we are going to party, so I said cool. So then apparently what happened, Melanie knows this guy that was, I don't know how true it is, but he was drunk, and he was drinking at Iguana Rana Nightclub and then he went and pick her up because she knows him and he was supposed to take them out. And when he picked her up, he picked her up from work and was supposed to take her home, and when he met the intersection from Dolphin Street and Cemetery Road, you always have to stop at the road because you have a stop sign. She says she is telling him to slow down and slow down.
If you are drunk and you have a little liquor in your head, you won't worry about who else is with you and all I am saying is that it is wrong because he can't jolly ride with her in town. Regardless if he was drunk and he had stress and he had stuff going wrong, he was going through that on his own. She said she was telling him to slow down and he still drove through. When he drove through the intersection, she told me that my sister was sitting down in the middle of them, because she had her elbows on the two seats sending a text message, so when the vehicle crashed she didn't know what happened to her.
Everything caught her unexpectedly because she was sitting at the middle of her and what happened is that she flew through the window and landed up into the fence and onto the sidewalk. She had a bust about this size in the back of her head. Her entire chest was broken up, all her bones were broken up. That just tells you that he wasn't driving slow with them because if he was driving slow, she wouldn't have gotten any of those injuries. Regardless of what they knocked into, that would have flipped it over and that would have been it."
Police say that an alcohol sample has been taken from Mathews to determine his blood alcohol level, that he has been served with a notice of intended prosecution and again is in the hospital under police guard. The third passenger in the Prado, 23-year-old Melanie Pollard wasn't seriously hurt. Ottley, who was driving the Camry, also wasn't seriously hurt.
