He beat his father in law to death with a baseball bat and was charged for murder but yesterday 27-year-old Darwin Soberanis aka "Granny" pled guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. "Granny" Soberanis was accused of killing 51-year-old Gabriel Pinelo on October 15th of 2004 in San Ignacio Town. Pinelo was the father of Soberanis' ex-wife Elvira Pinelo.
Pinelo's badly beaten body was found under his bed next to the bat which was used to kill him. The only possible motive for the heinous murder is that the day before the attack, Soberanis had allegedly attacked his then girlfriend and Gabriel Pinelo's daughter Elvira at the University of Belize's Central Farm campus.
Yesterday in court, Justice Troadio Gonzalez accepted the plea. He will sentence "Granny" Soberanis on Friday.
