A man whose body was floating in the river near the Belcan Bridge at 2 am this morning has been tentatively identified as Geovanni Martinez

Unconfirmed reports to 7NEWS this evening are that Martinez is described as dark skinned, he had dreadlocks, and wore a distinctive gold tooth in his mouth. He was found in the river with injuries to his head alongside a bicycle and a small butane tank.

Police were awaiting the results of a post mortem to determine if the injuries were received in a hit and run or if they were the result of foul play.

7NEWS tracked down Martinez's neighbors in the Coney Drive Area who say the last time they saw him was yesterday morning when he came around to sell them okra. They describe him as being from Honduras known to them as a sort of drifter, even though he maintained a residence in the area.
