He's passed 13 Christmases in jail and now Anthony Major will spend his 14th. The story starts with a Belizean American chef who says that on November first, Major approached him with a gun and stole $550 in cash from him. Major was charged with robbery but told the court that's not how it went and he's not guilty, at least not of robbery.
He says that he was buying crack cocaine for the chef, but tricked him by giving him two packs of Andrews instead of crack. Of course, 'fessing up to drug peddling is not really a great alibi for someone charged for theft. Still, he's accused of assault with a firearm - an offence for which no bail can be granted at the Supreme Court.
All the same, Major begged the court for bail, telling Magistrate Sharon Frazer that he had just recently got out of jail and had no intention of going back to jail for the Christmas, because he'd already spent 13 Christmases away from his family. Nonetheless, he will still pass the Pascua in prison as his case was adjourned for February 7, 2008.
