Dan Man, he was the voice behind "Albert Street" - the anthem for the street riot in Belize City in 2005. Since then Dan Man has sung other issue-oriented tunes and even ran in a village council election. And now Dan Man is back - with his first commercial release in two years. It is called "scroll" and never one to shy away from controversy - his new CD has a lot of it. One track that jumped out at us was "Miss Jones." He is talking about Marion Jones and he says her uncle gave her bad advice. Which uncle? We asked him.
Dan Man, Performer
"When I first created Miss Jones, to be honest with you, Miss Jones has been misunderstood. People took it as if I am singing that for a political reason. No, at the time when I saw thing and I put everything together, I said it is very shocking to know that the world fastest woman, which was a black woman, had fallen and the advice that was given to her, I totally disagree with. I was very overwhelmed and I composed the song."
Keith Swift,
So the uncle you are talking about is who?
Dan Man,
"Well I will let the song explain itself. I don't really want to go deep into because I respect all Belizeans, especially the person..."
Keith Swift,
Her uncle is Godwin Hulse?
Dan Man,
"Yes."
Keith Swift,
Who will like this CD?
Dan Man,
"A wide variety of people; young, old, man, woman, and child. My favorite track is track one. It targets violence against women. I have tone down a little. I have gotten a little more melodious. I have done a lot of reggae on this album. It is reggae and dancehall. The expression is still there, the motivation is still there."
The CD is available widely. You can buy a copy personally from Dan Man tomorrow on Albert Street.
