Today thirty three year Victor Gillett, the driver accused with causing Sunday's fatal traffic accident at mile nineteen on the Northern Highway, was taken over to Belize City's Magistrate Court. Gillette, who fled the scene around six that evening, was later found by police in Crooked Tree Village.
Gillett was arraigned on at least nine charges including manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, use of motor vehicle not covered by third party risk insurance, the use of an unlicensed vehicle, unlicensed motor vehicle and two counts of negligent harm against the two passengers who were injured.
Investigations reveal that Gillett, who was driving a ford pickup, was overtaking, but when he realized that he couldn't make it, he pulled back into his lane and hit a Toyota Hilux causing the pickup to reel out of control and flip three times. Gilbert Chun, a driver from police special branch received serious head injuries and died at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Chun's two passengers were also hurt.
