Over the Christmas, the Customs Department was cracking down on contra-bandidos in northern Belize. And one group was specially tasked for this. It’s called the Consejo Enforcement Unit and it has been operating since November 24 within the Corozal District, scouring the banks of the Hondo River, and performing checkpoints and house searches. Today, they displayed their seizures including dozens of cases of beer, and soft drinks, cases of liquor, and red bull, cartons of cigarettes, and hundreds of gallons of fuel, as well as a handy amount of perishable items including vegetables and eggs. In one month, the team estimates that they collected about $50,000 worth of contraband. They say they will destroy the beer, soft drinks and cigarettes, sell the liquor and red bull at public auction and hand out the perishable goods to charitable institutions.
