Three days after cane farmers in the Corozal District returned to a field about a mile from Xaibe Village to start harvest after burning the area, the men made a gruesome discovery around two on Monday afternoon. Two miles into the cane field and scattered amongst the dry area were what appeared to be remains from a human skull and bones. Also found were remnants of clothing believed to be a pair of pants. Although the body was burnt beyond recognition, authorities have been able to determine that it was a man. What the police do not know is if he was the victim of foul play. According to police, the remains have since been sent to the forensic lab for testing and they have been going through their files of missing persons.
The only report of interest is a mental patient who is believed wandered off and has not been seen or heard of since. However police say they have nothing to suggest that the charred remains found are that of the missing person. Police believe the remains have been in the cane field for a month. They are now hoping that dental records might be able to assist them in identification.
