And one thing that is sure to send more cases to court is the installation of closed circuit security cameras across the city. These cameras will be put up in areas that police call hotspots to constantly monitor them for criminal activity. No announcement has been made, but we figure the cameras are coming soon as the posts were installed today. But Eriona Swift who lives at the corner of Kraal Road and Haynes Street told us she’s none too happy about it. She says the put the post in her yard without asking permission.
Eriona Swift, Unhappy
“Mr. Broaster came into my yard without permission, nobody was at home, so I feel that he violated my right as a Belizean, as a human being. As a senior police officer he shouldn’t have done that. He should have just come and ask who lives at the place and wait until I come before he does anything. But he didn’t do that so all I ask them to please do is to come talk to me like a big person, senior to senior, and let us work out something because I feel that they jeopardized my property and invaded my rights because if you did that that to me, you can do that to everybody else. How would you feel if I put a lamppost in your yard without you being there.”
Jules Vasquez,
How do you feel that you will have, if things go as they want it, that they will have a camera the oversight your house?
Eriona Swift,
“Well I feel it is violating me again because it will be looking into my private life but I have no problem with the camera because the police have to do its job and I really want to help the policemen but I just feel they could have come and do it in a different way.”
We do know that Superintendent Broaster went to see Swift today, but there’s no word if any settlement was arrived at.
