She desperately wanted to get her son out of jail - and that’s why Alba Carcamo didn’t think twice before agreeing to pay a man $1,100 to secure her son’s release. Well tonight Alba Carcamo is out $500 and her son is still in jail. She claims she paid Javier Mendez, a former Police Special Constable the $500. He claimed he was a police officer and showed no ID but still convinced Carcamo he could secure the release of her son 29-year-old Johnny Carcamo. Carcamo – the son was jailed after an altercation on Kelly Street on February 15th. He was arraigned on three charges – one of which was having gang insignia tattooed on his body. And that’s why Johnny Carcamo didn’t get bail – but Alba Carcamo says Javier Mendez told her he could get it and she believed.

Alba Carcamo, Conned
[Translation] “On Friday Mr. Javier Mendez came to my daughter’s house telling her he was from the police. I was not at home. My daughter called me to come home immediately because the police was looking for me. I went home and when I arrived he asked me my particulars like my name, age. So I gave him my particulars. He then asked me if he wanted that my son come out of jail. I told him yes and what I needed to do. He said he was going to help me with that. He told me I needed $1,100 for my son to come out of jail and that he was going to help me with that. I told him I don’t have that kind of money but that I would find it because I wanted my son out. He said he was all right with that but that on Saturday we needed to go to prison in a private car. I asked to go by bus but he said we needed to go in a private vehicle.

He said he was going to get a friend and they came to my house and we went to Hattieville. We went to Hattieville we went in and he only went up to my son and told him that he was there for my son to know him, that’s all he said, nothing else.

On Tuesday I gave him $500 and he came saying he was working and said to be on swing bridge at ten minutes to 3 so that we go to court for him to see what he could do. When I reached there he was waiting and asked me for the balance of the money. I told him that he had the money but would give him it at court when we reached. He said go ahead and I’ll behind. I waited for him until 4 and he never came back.”

Alfonso Noble,
Did he show you any type of identification?

Alba Carcamo,
“No kind of identification but you know as a mother we wish to see our children at out of jail.”

Police are looking for Javier Mendez. He is not a police officer but was a former special constable attached to the Tourism Police Unit. He was recently terminated for an unrelated incident.
