On Saturday in San Felipe Village in the Orange Walk District, a two-year-old died after being locked in a car. And tonight, police say the mystery is how he got into the car. At around 11 am on Saturday, 37 year old Isabel Cowo realized that her son 2-year-old Eliseo was missing. Along with neighbors, she launched a frantic search and it ended at four when the small child was found dead inside their neighbor’s car. Eyewitnesses say he was curled up on a small mat on the driver’s seat.

Best information suggests that he somehow got into the car, and once in there became trapped and eventually suffocated as the windows were closed. Today our colleagues at Channel 10 in Orange Walk spoke to the officer commanding, Robert Mariano, asking him how such a small child got into the car in the first place.

Supt. Robert Mariano, Officer Commanding – O/W Police
“The investigation shows that the vehicle, the door was locked. However one of the doors was not totally locked but the glass was up and probably, because of the heat, we believe caused the death of that child.”

Fortunato Noble, Channel 10
“So it seems that a 2 year old child can open a car door and hop inside a car and subsequently lock himself inside. It seems almost impossible.”

Supt. Robert Mariano,
“Well a lot of impossible things become possible these days. But actually we are not saying he locked himself up. It could have been that him and other children were playing in the area. The thing is that we have to go on the fact and the fact is that no violence was shown on that child.”

A post mortem confirmed that there were no signs of violence on the child’s body and the pathologist is yet to submit his final report.

And another child – this one a ten year old died in Orange Walk this

weekend, but there is no mystery to the death of 10 year old Christian Caceres: he simply drowned. On Saturday afternoon at about 2:00, he was swimming with his mother and his two older sisters. At around 4:00, he dived into the water and did not resurface. Search teams were deployed but they didn’t find him until About half an hour later, and by then it was too late.

These images taken during the search and right after his body was recovered were provided by CTV-3 in Orange Walk Town.
