Only five days after 18 year old John Chessman Jr. was acquitted of the murder of Mara Naomi Garcia he is back in the news. Chessman is in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital recovering from two bullet wounds he received to the left shoulder and the back.
Police are not sure if the attempted murder is connected to the Lord’s Bank homicide, but one day after Chessman was set free, around 8:40 on Friday night he was shot as he stood with a group of men at the corner of Mahogany and Sarstoon Streets. The suspect identified as eighteen-year-old Osman Mitchell rode up on a bicycle and opened fire. This morning he appeared in Magistrate’s Court where he was formally arraigned on the charged of attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm. Mitchell was remanded to the Hattieville Prison.
In related news, on April twenty ninth Chessman’s brother Robert Gillett will be sentenced for the manslaughter of Mara Naomi Garcia. Gillett had pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
