Police are reporting a violent carjacking and abduction in the small village of Caledonia in northern Belize. At midnight on Friday, 34 year old Elizabeth Chan, was driving from Santa Clara Village to Caledonia Village along with her 14 year old daughter. But at the junction of the Northern Highway and the Caledonia Road, she experienced engine problems. When she got the car started four men asked her for a ride to Caledonia.
They then got into the pan of the pickup but a short distance down the road, one of them held a sharp object to her neck whilst her daughter was being held around the neck. The men took commandeered the vehicle and drove onto a cut off leading to Libertad village. That’s where they stopped tied and Chan and her daughter to a tree. They then left in her vehicle taking her purse with personal documents and some cash. Shortly after, Chan and her daughter managed to free themselves.
Police have recovered the vehicle and have detained Brandon Eli Munguia Ortiz, 21yrs, and Jairo Antonio Canahui Reyes, 26yrs, both Guatemalan cane cutters of San Lorenzo Village, Orange Walk District, pending charges.
