Two days after forty one year old Mennonite contractor Wilhelm Braun was gun down at the SP 2000 construction site inside the Corozal Free Zone, Belize police have yet to find the killers. The only person who had been detained, a Chetumal businessman, was released after tests for gunpowder residue came back negative. Authorities say the murder was well planned and are investigating the possibility that drugs may have been involved.
They strongly believe that the two shooters described as Hispanics came from across the Mexican border. Corozal police have been closely working with their Mexican counterparts to assist in the investigation. Today the Officer in charge of Corozal Police Station Superintendent Miguel Guzman told 7NEWS that they are now following other leads in the case.
On Thursday afternoon a post mortem was conducted on the body of Wilhelm Braun and it revealed that he died due to internal and external bleeding as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. Braun was shot to the chest and back of the head. The killers are believed to have used a hand gun and a submachine gun. And while the shooters may have managed to get away by running through some nearby bushes, jumping a fence and possibly by crossing the Rio Hondo along the Belize/Mexico border, it was all witnessed by several persons in the area who we understand have been assisting the police with a description of the suspects.
At the time of his murder Wilhelm Braun had been working at the SP 2000 construction site for close to six months.
