Shots were fired during an attempted burglary this morning in Belama. Three men were about to burglarize a house when the owner showed up and opened fire. Keith Swift found out that it’s not the first time thieves have targeted this home.
Keith Swift Reporting,
Despite the locked gate, burglar barred windows, and two dogs – this morning around 11 - three men attempted to break into Maximo Romero’s home in Belama.
Carlton Cain, Neighbour
“I got a call from a neighbour, Mr. Romero who lived over there and he told me there were some guys circling behind his house. Apparently they had been doing this from since Monday. The other neighbour Mr. Jose who lives over here, he called Mr. Romero and Mr. Romero called me and we called the neighbours and I came up and found the police and some other guys here.”
Keith Swift,
When you came here what did you find?
Carlton Cain,
“They weren’t in the house, they were on the back street behind
Benny’s and then some policemen and a couple of the other neighbours were here and they had one of the guys already in the police vehicle handcuffed. Apparently they were attempting to get into the house, they were in the yard already but they didn’t get into the club as yet.”
The men fled after Romero fired a warning shot in the area. They ran through this empty lot but one was captured. Carlton Cain is Romero’s neighbour. Residents on Me Amigo Lane have been on alert because of a recent rash of break-ins. Cain has fell victim twice.
Carlton Cain,
“They broke into his house before. They’ve broken into mine twice and to my neighbour Mr. Claire over there twice as well so they’ve been targeting this area because what happen is everybody goes to work and school and they look at that. They watch us and see the opportunity to try to get into your house but we share phone numbers with each other and soon as one see something happening they call everybody else and that’s come everyone was here when this incident happened.
It is like you work hard for your stuff and if you have someone depriving you, it makes you feel impotent as a man. It is like I can’t even protect my own home. But we’ve requesting certain things like the clearing down of bushes from around the area and more police patrol and stuff but we haven’t really seen any improvement in those areas.”
Though neighbours say police detained two suspects – police told us they have one suspect detained pending charges.
