Egbert Broaster was one of those Belize City residents who lived on the margins of society. He was mentally disturbed, but he was also a classic character and well known resident. Called “Rusty Iron”, he could always be seen dressed in a crocus sack, carting around a wheelbarrow usually filled with stones. He was also often seen shouting – at nothing in particular. Well last night he was viciously and inexplicably murdered. Jacqueline Godwin has more.
Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
All the police have to go on at this time is that just before ten o’clock last night 61 year old Egbert Broaster was pushing his wheelbarrow on Central American Boulevard. But as he passed by the lamppost behind me, he reportedly got into an argument with another man. That man pulled out a knife and stabbed him. Broaster fell to pavement where he fell for a long time bleeding profusely from a deep stab wound he had received to the right side of his body. Ten minutes after he was rush to the KHMH he died.”
Margaret Broaster, Sister of Murder Victim
“If anybody could come tell we something, we would greatly appreciate it. We would appreciate it for true because when they came and told me the news I couldn’t sleep. I wish it was day. I said I know my brother was coming up and now he didn’t even reach home. He didn’t reach home.”
Margaret Broaster believes someone took advantage of her brother and killed him because as far as she knows, he troubled no one, only that he was not afraid to speak his own mind.
Jacqueline Godwin,
Margaret no doubt the family is in a shock, you didn’t expect this to happen to your brother. What do you believe happened?
Margaret Broaster,
“Somebody tried to chance him man. I think dah chance they tek off a him. Our neighbours said it is somebody who chanced him because he doesn’t interfere with people. He doesn’t interfere with people. He works with is wheelbarrow, and he didn’t beg too you know, he didn’t like to beg. He did his only little work. He created his work.
He was coming home but before home he would buy his stuff he needs, coca cola or his bun and his bread.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
Police say the reports they have been receiving suggests that he got into argument with another person and it is that person who stabbed him. Do you know if somebody was threatening your brother’s life?
Margaret Broaster,
“No I don’t think so. I know he liked to rail up by himself, he just talk up right so. When he talked, he talked hard so I don’t know if anybody was threatening him.”
Again the family is appealing to anyone with information to contact the nearest police station. Jacqueline Godwin reporting for 7NEWS.
Police have no one detained.
