There was a shooting on the swing bridge at 4:45 this evening. It involved an ex policeman who shot two men that were trying to rob him. Javier Castellanos was carrying his licensed nine milimeter pistol in the downtown area when the pair jumped him as he was walking up the southern side of the bridge. They were apparently trying to steal his gun. But they didn’t get it and reports are that they tried to run off, but Castellanos had already pulled his weapon and fired at the pair of them as they ran over the bridge.
He hit one of them, whose name is reported to us as Kareem Barona, but the other one managed to get away. Barona was shot in the leg and is being treated at the KHMH. Police recovered three nine milimeter shells from the center of the bridge. Castellanos is presently at the station.
Best information suggests that Castellanos was behind the Commercial Center when the two would be robbers saw his weapon and hatched the plan to rob him.
