Earlier on in the newscast, you heard the Prime Minister outline the five million dollar city renewal programme which will offer jobs to gang affiliated youth. But at this press conference, he also admitted that crime has only gotten worse, and serious measures need to be taken to arrest it. The police have outlined a nine point plan and one of those points is the plan to intercept phone calls. It’s controversial and the Prime Minister explained today why he was putting it out there.
Hon. Dean Barrow,
“Improve intelligence and interdiction through intercepts and I am glad you asked the question Adele because I want to put this out there squarely. I have had my own advice on this matter and I believe based on that advice that we can begin telephone intercepts under the current state of the law. The only drawback is that I am not sure about the evidence gathered, the material gathered, can help us to perhaps prevent crimes, I don’t know if you need to put some of that evidence in court under the current law we can do that. There might be a need then to do a whole new Bill to provide for that. But I am determined given all that’s happening that we should, either under the current law or under a new law, use this tool of telecommunications intercept to assist our intelligence gathering.”
The police will be having a press conference next week.
