This morning, Magistrate Edd Usher told Lovina Canto she was going to jail for firearms possession and the 53 year old fainted right there in the courtroom. In fact the entire Canto family was remanded, the father, mother and son after police found a loaded 38 and a 9 mm amongst the 26 year old son’s possessions in the family’s home on Dolphin Street. When Lovina Canto got the news, she fainted in court and had to be carried out by her son, placed into a vehicle and rushed to the hospital.
Both the guns have licenses but they are fraught with discrepancies – including the fact that both the 38 and the 9 mm have the same serial number – a virtual impossibility, according to the police.
In the end the charge was made to stand for only the 9mm pistol and with that Jason Canto, the son, and his father Mario Canto were remanded to prison until May 11th. The DPP dropped the charges against Lovina Canto.
