7 people were killed on the ten mile stretch of the Northern Highway just outside Orange Walk Town in less than a week. Again that is the number of people who were killed in traffic accidents in Orange Walk in the entire 2008. The officer commanding Orange Walk Police Superintendent Joseph Myvette says his officers will be stepping up highway patrols over the Easter break. But more than that, he says drivers are in control of their own safety – and gave a few well worn tips that bear repeating.

Supt. Joseph Myvette,
“Driving wise, we are advising people to stay within the speed limits. Certainly the highway patrol is going to be out there monitoring the highway. It would be advisable to travel when the road is not at the temperature it is, especially in the afternoon. And in respect to safety tips, those of you who are leaving your homes for the Easter, ensure that your homes are properly secured and that your neighbours keep a watchful eye for you when you are not at home as well as those travelling to different beaches and like for example in the Orange Walk District in the Honey Camp area, you are advised to take safety precautions, especially those that will go swimming.”
