Imagine being involved in a wreck like this one and living to tell the tale. Well that is exactly what happened to twenty eight year old Belizean construction worker Eladio Balam of Chan Chen Village in the Corozal District. Reports are that around seven twenty on Wednesday night Eladio Balam and passenger 18 year old Aldo Mejia were in the car on the Northern Highway, but between miles eighty nine and ninety Balam lost control of the small car. The car flipped and smashed into a concrete structure on the side of the highway before landing on its roof. Luckily, Balam and Mejia were wearing their seatbelts.

As can be seen in the photos provided by one of our viewers the car was extensively damaged and it is a miracle that the passenger Mejia not only walked away from the wreck unhurt but the driver Balam only received facial injuries that are not considered life threatening. In fact today when 7News contacted the Balam family they told us that Eladio Balam is hospitalized in Chetumal but his condition has been classified as stable and that he is expected to return home in three days.

According to the Corozal Police Eladio Balam and Aldo Mejia were travelling from the Santa Elena border to Corozal Town when the accident occurred. Authorities say at this time they have not been able to determine if speeding may have been a factor 7News would like to thank one the viewers who provided us with the photos and was one of the first persons on the scene who helped to rescue Eladio Balam from the car.
