Last week, 27-year-old Allen James was convicted of a June 2007 armed robbery at Sen Sen Store and he was hoping to get a non custodial sentence today in the Supreme Court, but instead he will be serving 10 years in jail. James called 5 character witnesses to speak up for him, and apologized to the court and to the victim, and begged the judge not to send him to jail.
But a conviction for robbery carries a minimum sentence of ten years – unless the judge finds what’s called an “extenuating circumstance”. Justice Lucas told James that even with his five character witnesses, he found no such circumstance and imposed the minimum sentence.
