A man from san victor village was shot by a law enforcement team in Douglas this afternoon. His condition is not confirmed at this time, but it is believed to be serious as he has reportedly been transferred to the KHMH. Here’s how it happened. It all started last night when a team of BDF soldiers and Customs officers were on a river patrol when they came upon four doreys full of contraband beers, soft drinks and vegetables. These pictures were provided to us by the Customs Department this evening.
The security team secured the vessels until daybreak. That is when the vehicle unit was called in to transport the illegal items. Reports are that as the contraband goods were being loaded from off the doreys into two customs vehicles which is when a mob of at least thirty persons armed with machetes charged at the law enforcement officers. Sources tell 7News that is when the security team responded by firing warning shots but we understand one of those shots caught one of men who was seriously injured.
Sitting on the eastern bank of the Rio Hondo – which forms the northern border with Mexico, Douglas is a known hotspot for contraband. We note that during the sugar riots earlier this year, it was a san victor resident, 44 year old Douglas Gutierrez who was killed by police fire as he was in the back of a truck that barrelled through a road block. We’ll follow up on today’s shooting in Friday’s newscast.
