Car thefts have become a regular feature of the evening news – but this week, the news hasn’t been about the thefts, it’s been about the thieves! Four men were charged for scrapping an L200 pickup earlier this week and 42 year old Vidal Campos a building contractor and ex police constable was today charged with vehicle theft of a Jeep Cherokee from a Belize City car rental agency. But more than just one stolen vehicle, police say he is wanted for multiple crimes in various municipalities.
And that’s why as soon as he walked out of the Belize City Magistrate’s court on ten thousand dollars bail after pleading not guilty, he was re-arrested and taken to Belmopan and Dangriga where he is being investigated for obtaining property by deception and Placencia where he is wanted for forgery.
As regards the Jeep Cherokee he was charged for today Police say they found it at his residence in Caledonia village following up on evidence gathered when they found a number of stolen car parts in Caledonia. The Cherokee valued at twenty five thousand dollars was originally rented by Campos from Varela Auto rental on June fifth and was supposed to be returned on August 6th.
