From the late 80’s up to fairly recently, the name “DJ Wiz” was popular in the nightclub business, but tonight DJ Wiz whose real name is Lewis Leiva is getting ready to knock down a jail sentence for rape at the Kolbe Prison in Hattieville. Justice Adolph Lucas today sentenced Leiva to 9 years in prison. Before he decided on the sentence, Justice Lucas heard mitigation pleas from six character witnesses including a Catholic priest, and a slew of businessmen. And those testimonies seemed to have helped.
Justice Lucas told Leiva that the maximum sentence for rape is life imprisonment and the minimum is 8 years, but because of the mitigating testimony – he gave Leiva only 9 years. The rape happened on July 12 of 2007 when Leiva was the proprietor of Red Hut Inn in Bella Vista. He plied his guest, an 18 year old American tourist, with alcohol and then raped her in her room for 30 seconds. In the trial he admitted to having sex with her but maintained that it was consensual. Leiva’s sentence started running two weeks ago on September ninth.
