The Ebony Street community is in mourning tonight after one of their own was murdered last night. But 41 year old Anthony Burgess McKenzie wasn’t a threat to anyone, he was a harmless, genial person, known to be mentally challenged. And while he was the last person who would initiate gun warfare, that didn’t matter to shooters who gunned him down as he was minding his own business in his backyard. Witnesses heard a total of 10 shots and 7 hit Anthony McKenzie. Here’s more.
Keith SwiftReporting,
41 year old Anthony McKenzie Burgess was filling this 5 gallon water bottle in his yard on Ebony Street when he was ambushed by a gunman. His uncle Orlando Burgess says that it appears that Anthony wasn’t the intended target.
Orlando Burgess, Uncle of Deceased
“It seems like somebody probably run through the yard and then was being chased by someone else who had a gun and then he met him back there and

wasn’t conscious because back there was dark and they shot him. That is what we figure, we could be wrong.”
Keith Swift,
“So he was in the wrong place at the wrong time?”
Orlando Burgess,
“Well I wouldn’t want to say that either because he lives here. This is his home.”
And it was inside his own yard that Anthony Burgess was shot 7 times in his buttocks and left inner leg. He died a few hours later at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
Orlando Burgess,
“It is a real shock to everybody. Nobody expected this but we are still kind of check with people in the neighbourhood who hang out to find out what really took place so we could come to a conclusion but this was a shock.”
A shock because Anthony Burgess was well known and liked in the ebony street area. For many he was their run man – now he is dead and no one can think why.
Orlando Burgess,
“Like everybody else, he is helpful, he is helps everyone in the neighbourhood. Anytime you needed anything in this neighbourhood, he is always there to help to us and the neighbourhood to try and make a difference in his own little way. So we can’t understand they shot him but we are still yet trying to figure yet. The man do get into trouble, growing up you fuss and you fight, but no gang.”
A post mortem will be conducted tomorrow.
