Joshua Arana from the Garifuna Collective is known to be one of the virtuosos of the Garifuna drum. And last week he took that knowledge to Tegucigalpa Honduras where he participated in summit of Black Central American musicians. After a week of bonding He says he discovered that the drum patterns that he plays resonate throughout the Central American isthmus.

Joshua Arana,
“It was about how everybody in the Caribbean, different cultures and different races can better off their music, all music that is affected by or have some affiliation with Africa. So it was an Africa Caribbean. I got to find out that all the music originated from the same place. It showed that Africa was the birthplace of all of the music that all of us play. It doesn’t matter what language we sang in or what rhythm we played in, it basically originated from the same place. It was easy for us to relate to each other when it comes to the music. The idea is for us in the Caribbean to come together and try to preserve the music, Afro-music in the Caribbean for Belize we have Creole and we have Garifuna music.”

The event was sponsored by the Spanish Government.
