Twenty three year old Leroy Gomez who was convicted of 3 offences on Monday, among them rape and robbery, was sentenced to 22 years today by Justice Herbert Lord. Gomez was sentenced to 9 years for rape, 11 years for robbery and 2 years for aggravated assault.
Justice Lord stipulated that the sentence for rape should run concurrent to the other sentences. Gomez therefore, will serve a total of 20 years effective from today's date. Gomez had one previous conviction for robbery for which he is currently serving time.
Before he decided on the sentences, Justice Lord heard a plea for mitigation from Gomez's brother, Rosendo Anderson who said he knows his brother to commit robberies, not rape. Gomez was not represented by an attorney. Crown Counsel Christelle Wilson represented the prosecution.
The incident occurred around 3:30 am on August 23, 2008. Gomez robbed and raped a 23 year old woman in an open lot on Antelope Street. He also committed an aggravated assault with a knife on the woman's 19 year old female companion.
After being convicted On Monday, he allegedly threatened the Crown Counsel as he walked out of court.
