Yesterday we reported on three men who got bail in the Supreme Court: including a man who wanted to marry a 14 year old that had a child for him, and another who stabbed a woman constable in her workplace, the Dangriga Police station.
Well, the PUP today condemned the tone being set by those actions in court. In a strongly worded release, the United Women's Group says that it, quote, "absolutely rejects any proposal made by any person or authority in Belize to institutionalize or formalize the continuation of the abuse, sexual, physical, mental and psychological of any child in Belize."
The release goes unto say that the Women's Group takes the position that quote, "no officer of the law should condone the wrongdoing of any individual, by permitting that person a defence to his actions at the expense of children."
If we read it correctly, the officer in this case - who is defending the man accused of carnal knowledge of a 14 year old - would be Oscar Sabido - a PUP Standard Bearer and head of the Western Caucus.
The release concludes that quote, "Belizean women and children have a legitimate expectation that the judiciary and the legal system in Belize will not only protect their rights, but also help to end the violence against them."
The call on the Bar Association, the Council of Churches, the National Women's Commission and the National Committee for Families and Children to intervene.
