18 year-old Tanisha Bell, a resident of Antelope Street Extension, is in prison tonight, and she will remain there for 7 days because she insulted Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer.
Bell was charged with possession of controlled drugs because police allegedly caught her with 1 gram of cannabis. She pleaded guilty to that offence today, and because she showed no remorse, and didn't provide a sufficient reason why she shouldn't be sent to jail, Senior Magistrate Frazer remanded her for 1 day.
She was taken back to the cellblock at the Magistrate's Court to await transport to prison, and while there, an employee of the court overheard her insult Senior Magistrate Frazer.
This employee reported the incident to Senior Magistrate Frazer, who decided to extend her remand from 1 day to 7 days because she showed disrespect to authority.
According to police, at around 7:25 p.m. yesterday, police officers were on mobile patrol, when they saw a group of people standing at the corner of Elston Kerr and Antelope Streets.
When they approached the group, the officers said that they saw Bell push her hand into her right pocket, pull out a white plastic bag, and throw it on the ground.
When the bag was retrieved, the officers found the drugs, and arrested and charged Bell for drug possession.
