This afternoon at around 1:00, 60 year old American Cliff Kirk was brought into the municipal airport in Belize City where he was transferred directly to a waiting ambulance. The San Pedro resident was the victim of a frightening home invasion and attempted murder on Northern Ambergris Caye.
He lives to the far north west of the island - 10 and a half miles north of San Pedro Town. That's where he built this secluded getaway, called Casa Brisas which was listed in the Wall Street Journal as being, quote, "totally off the grid" because of its remote location. Indeed, it can only be accessed by water.
And, this morning, in an extraordinary attack - that's how four assailants got there: reportedly on two jet ski's! At around 11:30, he was walking down the stairs when four masked men attacked him - and one of them shot him in the head. They then went into the house and stole a 9 millimeter pistol, a shotgun, and a brief case with an undisclosed amount of cash.
As we said it's some distance out of town, and so it was about an hour before they could get him to the town polyclinic, and then to the San Pedro Airstrip for a flight which left at 12:45. He was airlifted to Belize City and is listed in a critical condition.
Kirk is a US army veteran and his wife, Linda is a retired nurse. According to the San Pedro Sun, they are long-time island residents active in the community. The Casa Brisas sits on a three acre property, with its own marina.
We'll keep following this story.
